Endringsprosesser i naturen, i samfunnet og i menneskesinnet; geologiske, klimatiske og biologiske prosesser er sentralt i Tones kunstnerskap. Hun samarbeider med forskere fra ulike vitenskapsfelt, spesielt klimaforskere og \u00f8kologer, og er interessert i forundringen og fascinasjonen for naturen som ofte ligger til grunn for vitenskapen.<\/p>\n<p>Tone kommer fra g\u00e5rden Bjordam p\u00e5 grensen mellom Krager\u00f8 og Bamble i Telemark og har mastergrad i billedkunst fra Kunstakademiet i Oslo (KHiO). Atelieret hennes er i Nordmarka og hun har stilt ut ved en rekke kunstinstitusjoner i inn- og utland. I Tone Bjordams separatutstilling \u2018Flyt\u2019 kan du g\u00e5 inn i videoverk som viser fargede pigmenter som utfolder seg som abstraherte landskapsmalerier i bevegelse. Hun stiller ut tegninger og skulpturinstallasjon av steiner og mineraler, malerier i vinduer, fotografier av natur i mikro og makroperspektiv og videoer av dans.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SYNC<\/h3>\n<p>Alt forandrer seg hele tiden. Det flyter av g\u00e5rde, raskt for vann, ulidelig tungt og treigt i forskyvningene av de fjorten litosf\u00e6riske platene vi kaller jordskorpen. Lyset fra stjernene er gammelt n\u00e5r de n\u00e5r oss her p\u00e5 planeten. Bitte sm\u00e5 forandringer i hverdagens tempo, merker vi ikke, dreininger i spr\u00e5ket, kroppens vekst og aldring, l\u00e6rdom, hvordan tregrensa kryper oppover. Andre endringer roper voldsomt p\u00e5 oss i hurtige forl\u00f8p \u2013 men n\u00e5r skjer v\u00e6romslaget, egentlig? Kan vi strekke hodet, halsen, skuldrene, lungene og leveren \u2013 hele ribbekassa! \u2013 over flyten, floden, oversv\u00f8mmelsen, fra fj\u00e6ra, og komme p\u00e5 forskudd av verdens endring og si, hei, n\u00e5 folkens, skjer det?<\/p>\n<p>Menneskets \u00f8ye er begrenset, men det er begj\u00e6rlig. I Tone Bjordams kunst er der et driv til \u00e5 krysse over fra sm\u00e5 modeller av systemer, til st\u00f8rre endringsprosesser. Hun gj\u00f8r en myk inntrengning i det late hverdagsblikket. If\u00f8lge filosofen Achille Mbembe er tiden v\u00e5r preget av at ulike tidskonsepter st\u00f8ter sammen. Den geologiske dyptiden og den subjektive tidserfaringen gruses mot den historiske tiden vi organiserer samfunnene etter. Han skriver: \u00abPlanetens krise gj\u00f8r det meningsl\u00f8st \u00e5 skille mellom v\u00e5r kulturhistorie og naturhistorien. \u00c5 innse dette kan synkronisere oss med jorden\u00bb. Rytmen i verkene til Bjordam er n\u00e6r som en bass du h\u00f8rer forplantet gjennom betongvegger fra en kjeller, slik lydsporet til videoverket hennes <em>Liquid Landscape<\/em> fra 2005, hvor lyden var mer sanselig enn h\u00f8rbar. Pauser og \u00e5ndedrett lager rytmer som str\u00f8mmer gjennom det hele. I lydinstallasjonen <em>Timbre<\/em> (2024) rasler det mineralsk og minner om at biologien sitt strenge skille mellom levende og d\u00f8dt, har latt oss ta oss fore av mineraler p\u00e5 en spesielt bevisstl\u00f8s m\u00e5te. De kjente bergartene er alle formet av enorme press og temperaturer: noe skyver p\u00e5 noe, noe foldes. Likevel er det ikke en f\u00f8rste bevegelse Bjordams verker leder oss til, men et system i moden utfoldelse, med detaljer og helhet i samspill. En gjenfortrylling av omgivelsene v\u00e5re, gjennom vitenskap og folkekultur.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c5 flyte gjennom landskapet som om det ikke hadde noen grenser, som om elva der ikke var et hinder, som om krattskogens trengsel og hvisking omkring f\u00f8ttene var et kj\u00e6rtegn uten skadedyr og hvasse tipper. Med utmarka, eller mot? I kjernen av Tone Bjordams verker finner jeg det v\u00e5kne og vitebegj\u00e6rlige mennesket, som gjennom oppmerksom observasjon og fortolkende herming n\u00e6rmer seg det \u00e5 fange forandringer vi kan se og fatte. Hvordan endrer naturen seg? Jeg stiller meg sp\u00f8rsm\u00e5let: Hva er dette vi har kalt natur? En motsats til menneskene, det ville, \u00abmysterienes bok\u00bb, klimaet, skogen, en mekanisk prosess som forl\u00f8per bare det finnes drivkraft, krefter som overg\u00e5r det enkeltmennesket makter overskue. La g\u00e5! S\u00e5 lenge vi anerkjenner at ikke alle ting som fins \u2013 alt som p\u00e5virker livene v\u00e5re og andres \u2013 kan observeres direkte. Hvordan v\u00e6ret oppf\u00f8rer seg, selv om det er ekstremt sansbart med regn, vind og godv\u00e6rssolstr\u00e5ler som treffer den f\u00f8lsomme huden og lirker p\u00e5 svetten, er et eksempel p\u00e5 hvor n\u00e6rt og samtidig uoverskuelig abstrakt et hyperobjekt, som klimaendringene eller finanssektoren, kan v\u00e6re. De er systemer som unndrar seg og fordeler byrder av knapphet, men lar seg likevel gripe i analyser og observasjon over tid. Mennesker lyver, lager fortellinger og tar etter hverandre inntil det absurde, likevel er herming mellom artens fremste m\u00e5ter \u00e5 l\u00e6re p\u00e5. Og noen av fortellingene \u00e5pner passasjer i det det er mulig \u00e5 forestille seg, alts\u00e5 dr\u00f8mme om.<\/p>\n<p>I Bjordams vindusfolier og glassmaleri skjer en underlig overlapp av tider: du ser ut vinduet, og hva ser du, hvilket landskap fra hvilken \u00e6ra er synlig? En slik myk inntrengning i hverdagsblikket. Hva om vi alt er der, om ikke fremme i fremtiden, s\u00e5 til stede i en tid vi enn\u00e5 ikke har ordene for \u00e5 beskrive. Bjordams verker s\u00f8ker mot vekkingen, for om informasjon alene ikke er nok, gjenst\u00e5r \u00e5 dytte rolig i retning av erkjennelse, dette er v\u00e5r tid, formet og formes av valgene vi tar for oss selv og for andre. \u00c5 sette de ellers ikke direkte observerbare sakene som preger den enkeltes liv inn til den mikroplast gjennomstr\u00f8mmede margen, i tale, inspirerer v\u00e5r evne til \u00e5 delta i ordskiftet om slike glippende og glatte abstrakter. Bjordams kunstverk \u00e5pner for innlevelse som muliggj\u00f8r handleevne. Kunsten hennes er ikke \u2018<em>tidy<\/em>\u2019, men s\u00e5 er verden heller ikke det. Men si meg, n\u00e5r endring gradvis foreg\u00e5r rundt oss og i oss hele tiden, n\u00e5r skjer v\u00e6romslaget?<\/p>\n<p><em>Ragnhild Aam\u00e5s<br \/><\/em>Billedkunstner og skribent<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"english-info\">English<\/h2>\n<p>Tone Bjordam&#8217;s (b. 1975) artistic practice spans various mediums, including video, performance, photography, drawing, painting, sound, and sculpture installation. Central to her work is the exploration of transformation in nature; geological, climatic, and biological processes, as well as changes in society and the human mind. She collaborates with scientists, particularly climate researchers and ecologists, and is especially interested in the wonder and fascination for the natural world that often drives science.<\/p>\n<p>Tone comes from the farm Bjordam on the border between Krager\u00f8 and Bamble in Telemark. She has a master&#8217;s degree in visual arts from the Oslo Academy of Fine Arts (KHiO). Her studio is in Nordmarka, Oslo, and she has exhibited at many art institutions in Norway and abroad. In Tone Bjordam&#8217;s solo exhibition &#8216;Flow&#8217; you can walk through video installations with colored pigments unfolding, like abstracted landscape paintings in motion. She exhibits drawings and sculptures of rocks and minerals, paintings in windows, photographs of nature in micro and macro perspective, and videos of dance.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SYNC<\/h3>\n<p>Everything is constantly changing. It floats away: rapidly for water, incredibly heavy and slow<br \/>for the fourteen lithospheric plates we call the earth&#8217;s crust. Starlight is old when it reaches<br \/>us here on earth. We hardly notice tiny changes in the pace of everyday life, the shifts in<br \/>language, the growth and aging of the body, the process of learning, how the tree line creeps<br \/>upwards the formerly arid mountain. Other changes call out to us in their rapid succession \u2013<br \/>but exactly when does the weather shift happen? Can we stretch our head, neck, shoulders,<br \/>lungs, and liver \u2013 the whole ribcage! \u2013 over the river, the flow, the flooding, from the<br \/>seashore, get ahead of the transforming world and say, &#8220;Hey folks, it is happening, right<br \/>now\u00bb?<\/p>\n<p>The human eye is limited, yet it is avid. In Tone Bjordam&#8217;s body of work there is a drive to<br \/>cross over from small models of systems to larger processes of transformation. She executes<br \/>a soft intrusion into the lazy, everyday gaze. According to the philosopher Achille Mbembe,<br \/>our time is characterized by the collision of different concepts of time. Geological deep time<br \/>and the subjective experience of time are pitted against historical time, by which we<br \/>organize societies. He writes: &#8220;The planetary crisis makes it pointless to distinguish between<br \/>our cultural history and natural history. Realizing this can synchronize us with the Earth\u201d. The<br \/>rhythm in Bjordam&#8217;s works is almost like a bass you hear reverberating through concrete<br \/>cellar walls, like the soundtrack to her video work Liquid Landscape from 2005, were the<br \/>sound is more sensory than merely audible. Pauses and breathing create rhythms that flow<br \/>throughout. In the sound installation <em>Timbre <\/em>(2024), the rustling of the slate stones works as<br \/>a reminder of how biology&#8217;s strict distinction between living and dead, has allowed us to<br \/>gorge on minerals in a particularly unconscious way. Rock formations are shaped by<br \/>enormous pressure and temperatures; something pushes on something, something folds.<br \/>Yet, it is not a first movement that Bjordam&#8217;s works lead us to, but a mature system<br \/>unfolding, with details and the whole in interplay, a re-enchantment of our surroundings,<br \/>through science and folk culture.<\/p>\n<p>To move fluidly through the landscape as if it had no boundaries, as if the river were no<br \/>obstacle, as if the crowding and whispering of the thicket around the feet was a caress<br \/>without pests and sharp tips. To be in sync with the wild, or to move against it? At the centre<br \/>of Tone Bjordam&#8217;s works, I find the alert and inquisitive human creature, who through<br \/>attentive observation and interpretive mimicry, closes in on capturing changes that we can<br \/>see and grasp. How does nature change? I ask myself the question: What is this, that we<br \/>have called nature? Something to offset the category \u2018human\u2019? The wild, the &#8220;book of<br \/>mysteries&#8221;, the climate, the forest, a mechanical process that takes place only if there is<br \/>propulsion, forces that exceed what an individual human can easily grasp and recap. Fine,<br \/>alright! \u2013 but only as long as we recognize that not all things that exist \u2013 all the stuff that<br \/>affects our lives and the lives of others \u2013 can be directly observed.<\/p>\n<p>How the weather behaves, even though it is extremely perceptible with rain, wind, with soft<br \/>sunrays stroking sensitive skin and liberating droplets of sweat, these are examples of how<br \/>close, and at the same time, how unfathomably abstract a hyper object, such as climate<br \/>change or the financial sector, can be. They are systems that are evasive and distribute<br \/>burdens of scarcity, but nevertheless graspable in analysis and observation over time.<br \/>Humans lie, make stories, and imitate each other to the point of absurdity, yet imitation is<br \/>among the species&#8217; best ways of learning. And some of the stories open passages into what<br \/>is possible to imagine, ergo dream about.<\/p>\n<p>In Bjordam&#8217;s window foils and glass paintings, a strange overlap of timescales occurs: you<br \/>look out the window, and what do you see, which landscape from which era is visible? Such<br \/>a soft foray into the everyday gaze. What if we are there already, if not necessarily in the<br \/>future, then present in a time for which we lack the words to describe? Bjordam&#8217;s works<br \/>seek awakening, because if scientific information alone is not enough, what remains is a<br \/>gentle nudge towards acknowledgement; this is our time, it is shaped and it is being shaped<br \/>by the choices we make for ourselves and for others. Putting the otherwise not directly<br \/>observable things that imbue and matters for an individual&#8217;s life as deep as the very<br \/>microplastic-permeated marrow, into speech, inspires our ability to participate in discourse<br \/>about such slick and slippery abstractions. Bjordam&#8217;s artwork opens to empathy and<br \/>imagination which enables agency and action.
