Utstillingen Paradise Lost viser verk fra de siste 25 årene av Christian Houge sitt virke. Paradise Lost gir et unikt innblikk i kunstnerens utvikling og reise igjennom å etablere seg som kunstner med fotografiet som medium. Forholdet mellom mennesket og natur er et gjennomgående tema og fremtrer i ulik form og studie i seriene.
Hvor ser mennesket seg selv i og med naturen? Er vi i balanse eller har vi etablert et for sterkt behov for å erobre og være det mest brutale rovdyret? Hva står igjen etter oss; et frøhvelv, minnesmonumenter, tapte arter eller spor av handlinger for å gjenfinne en balanse med naturen?
I en urolig verden hvor brann, klimakrise og stadig utvinning av naturresurser for å tilrettelegge for teknologiske og menneskelig utvikling, gir Houge oss et mulighetsrom for å stoppe opp og reflektere over mennesket, natur, kultur, teknologi og historie.
BIO
Christian Houge (f. 1972) lever og har studio i Oslo, hvor han jobber med ulike fotografiske teknikker. Han er bereist kunstner som har igjennom sitt liv og virke oppsøkt ulike kulturer som har resultert i et dyptgående studie av ulike skjæringspunktet mellom natur, teknologi og menneskets identitet. Gjennom fotografi, film og installasjoner utforsker han hvordan vi former – og formes av – verden omkring oss. I Houges bilder møtes estetikk og uro. Han inviterer betrakteren til å se nærmere på forholdet vi har til omgivelsene våre, til tiden vi lever i og til fremtiden som venter.
Gjennom de siste 25 årene har Houges arbeider blitt vist både nasjonalt og internasjonalt fra Galleri Buer, Haugar Kunstmuseum, Preus Museum, til Fotografiska i Stockholm og California Museum of Photography i Los Angeles, for å nevne noen. Hans serier Residence of Impermanence og Death of a Mountain har mottatt internasjonale nominasjoner. Houge har blant annet også vært nominert til Prix Pictet Award, Leica Oskar Barnack Award, BMW Award og Bi-Annual Photograhy Prize.
Arbeidene hans er innkjøpt av sentrale institusjoner og samlinger.

The exhibition Paradise Lost presents works from the past 25 years of Christian Houge’s artistic practice. Paradise Lost offers a unique insight into the artist’s development and journey toward establishing himself as an artist working with photography as his primary medium. The relationship between humanity and nature is a recurring theme, appearing in different forms and studies throughout the series.
Where does humanity see itself in and with nature? Are we in balance, or have we developed too strong a need to conquer and become the most brutal predator? What will remain after us: a seed vault, memorials, lost species, or traces of efforts to rediscover harmony with nature?
In a turbulent world marked by fire, climate crisis, and continuous exploitation of natural resources to support technological and human progress, Houge offers us a space to pause and reflect on humanity, nature, culture, technology, and history.
BIO
Christian Houge (b. 1972) lives and works in Oslo, where he explores various photographic techniques. He is a well-traveled artist who, throughout his life and work, has sought out different cultures, resulting in an in-depth study of the intersections between nature, technology, and human identity. Through photography, film, and installations, he explores how we shape—and are shaped by—the world around us. In Houge’s imagery, beauty and unease coexist. He invites the viewer to take a closer look at our relationship with our surroundings, with the times we live in, and with the future that lies ahead.
Over the past 25 years, Houge’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally—from Galleri Buer, Haugar Art Museum, and Preus Museum to Fotografiska in Stockholm and the California Museum of Photography in Los Angeles, to name a few. His series Residence of Impermanence and Death of a Mountain have received international recognition. Houge has also been nominated for the Prix Pictet Award, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award, the BMW Award, and the Bi-Annual Photography Prize.
His works have been acquired by major institutions and collections.
