Den 7. januar 2024 gikk Leonard Rickhard bort, 78 år gammel. Leonard Rickhard ble født i Tvedestrand 12. mai 1945. Han tok sin utdanning i Oslo, og returnerte deretter til Arendal, hvor han bosatte seg og arbeidet livet ut. Med Leonard Rickhards bortgang mistet Norge en av landets mest markante kunstnere, Agder mistet en høyt respektert rådgiver innen kunstfeltet og Bomuldsfabriken Kunsthall mistet sin grunnlegger og sparringspartner. Som mentor lever Leos tankegods videre.
I 1992 kjøpte Arendal kommune det som i dag er Bomuldsfabriken Kunsthall. Leonard Rickhard var helt avgjørende for etableringen og utviklingen av kunsthallen. Han var en trofast rådgiver og inspirasjonskilde, fra vår spede begynnelse, til han gikk bort
Gjennom livet utviklet Rickhard et unikt formspråk. Stille øyeblikk, situasjoner hvor arbeid blir utført, modeller bygges eller der utsnitt av rom presiseres – er omformulert til vibrerende hendelser. Han sanket og videreformidlet motiver av forlatte brakkebygg, bjørkeskog, låvebygninger og landbruksmaskiner, ofte på reise i indre Agder. I motsetning til andre kunstmalere på Agder, vendte Rickhard blikket innover – ikke ut til havet og kystlinjen. Leonard Rickhard lokker oss inn i en verden hvor minner fra egen barndom i etterkrigstiden og personlige erindringer bearbeides.
Visningen Vår kjære Leo er blitt til i samarbeid med kunstsamler Terje Bodin Larsen, som også var nær venn av Leonard Rickhard.

Our dearest Leo
On January 7, 2024, Leonard Rickhard passed away, aged 78. Leonard Rickhard was born in Tvedestrand on May 12, 1945. He received his education in Oslo, and then returned to Arendal, where he settled and worked for the rest of his life. With Leonard Rickhard’s passing away, Norway lost one of our country’s most prominent artists, Agder county lost a highly respected adviser in the art field, and Bomuldsfabriken Kunsthall lost its founder and counselor. As a mentor, Leo’s ideas live on.
In 1992 Arendal municipality bought what has today become Bomuldsfabriken Kunsthall. Leonard Rickhard was utterly decisive for the establishment and development of the institution. He was a faithful advisor and source of inspiration, from our early days, until his passing away.
Throughout his life, Rickhard developed a unique visual language. Quiet moments, situations where work is carried out, models are built or where sections of space are specified – are reformulated into vibrating happenings. He collected and passed on motifs of abandoned barracks, birch forests, barns and agricultural machinery, often from his travels in the inner part of Agder. Unlike other painters in Agder, Rickard turned his gaze inwards – not towards the sea and the coastline. Leonard Rickhard lures us into a world where memories from his own childhood in the post-war period and personal recollections are processed.
The exhibition Our dearest Leo has been created in collaboration with art collector Terje Bodin Larsen, who also was a close friend of Leonard Rickhard.
